Mother’s Day

On May 10, 1908, American activist Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia held what is considered to be the first Mother’s Day celebration. Anna’s mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day. In 1914, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday.
