School communities today are deeply engaged in the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion; yet,
parents and caregivers; understanding of this work and how it relates to their participation in community varies. As members of a school community, the question of how we show up as members who are active partners is becoming more critical. As parents and caregivers, we often are tasked with being experts in different subjects. But, how do we feel when we talk about identity? Do we feel nervous? Scared? Uncertain? A solution is to create opportunities for parents and caregivers to further build knowledge, engage in reflection, and actively participate in learning related to identity so they can learn alongside their children, creating a more robust experience, and building a more identity conscious home and awareness as members of a community.
